Winter bites with its teeth or lashes with its tail. ~Montenegrin Proverb
These chill temperatures have my skin drying out daily despite the amount of body butter, body lotion, or body cream I put on it. And with dry skin comes being itchy all over, and I really hate that condition for a variety of reasons. The other night I had reached the end of being itchy and dry, so I walked into my pantry to make a wonderful body scrub. I stood there for a minute looking at various ingredients, but being picky since I had such an exact mission, namely something to scrub without hurting my already sensitive skin and that would give luxurious moisturizing qualities at the same time. I ended up with the following recipe.
I picked up brown sugar since I knew salt would burn and sting in any small cuts my skin might have already received in my previous scratching. I chose some pure raw honey for its moisture giving benefits along with its supposed antibacterial properties. I also read somewhere that it is also a humectant, meaning that it helps substances retain moisture. As a added feature of extra moisture and to make it easier to mix up, I used olive oil. Now originally I wanted to use coconut oil for this because it smells better and soaks into my skin quickly with no lasting residue, but unfortunately I didn’t have any more left. Olive oil smells, well, like olives and it’s rather thick and takes awhile to soak into the skin. Regardless, my skin turned out absolutely silky and smooth, and has stayed that way for about 2 days.
The following recipe is approximate amounts since I wasn’t really measuring this as I was making it. I make most scrubs in single use batches since I don’t want to run the chance of bacteria growing after mixing water, oil, and moist air from the shower. But the general idea with this scrub is to make sure you have enough liquid left over at the end to use as an extra dose of moisturizer.
Honey Sugar Body Scrub
1/2 cup of brown sugar
2 TBSP Raw Honey
1/4 cup Olive Oil
Mix all ingredients together with a fork in a microwavable safe bowl. Put mixture in microwave for 15 seconds. After heated, mix with fork again. Mixture should be a bit creamier due to melting sugar and honey. Put in microwave again for another 15 seconds. Mix again. Mixture should be warm but not hot to the touch. This is important! Do not let mixture be hot because it WILL BURN SKIN. Hot honey and oil stick to skin and burns easily. If too hot, wait until mixture cools to a cooler temperature. Bring mixture into shower and scrub skin with pleasantly warm scrub, rinse promptly with warm water. Do not use soap afterwards, it will remove all the moisture rich honey and oil. After drying off, use remaining oil and honey mixture as a body oil. Makes one single use scrub.
